DES100 Assignment 3 Group project

For this assignment, we had the challenge of giving information a physical form, information on a chosen problem. My group's chosen problem was "Lowering water usage."

There is currently a water shortage in Auckland and a huge contribution to this issue is a lack of knowledge around how much water they are using. It can be very difficult to track water once it has gone down the drain. An effective way to address this issue is to focus on children aged 7 to 12 in order to create healthy habits early on in life and promote these in a fun way for kids. Healthy habits such as taking shorter showers, turning off the tap when brushing teeth, and using the half flush function on the toilet. To help address the problem we have chosen to create an interactive representation of water usage in New Zealand bathrooms within the household.

We created a device called waterfalls which is designed to track water usage in the bathroom over the period of a week. Waterfalls users a counter system that warns the user when they are approaching excessive water usage in the bathroom for the week. This includes showers, full and half toilet flushes and taps. Each individual has their own waterfalls device which creates an opportunity to incorporate elements of competition between users in the process of habit building to save water. The goal of waterfalls is to build positive water usage habits for children by creating awareness around how much water is used by regular activities to promote more conscious consumption and usage.

How it works

The user uses water and places the corresponding counter into the WaterfallZ device. As the week progresses the number of counters in the device will increase. When the user is approaching the water consumption limit the devices warning light will activate. If the user has reached or exceeded their water limit the device’s warning light will turn off. Once the week is over the user will empty the counters out of the waterfalls device allowing them to restock the counter holders and restart this process for the following week
