Haiku Posters

Design 101 - Assignment One

In Design 101 our assignment was to design three different posters based on a haiku of our choice. Each poster had its own guidelines and rules to follow.

Poster One was to be in black and white and strictly only geometric shapes.

Poster two was a movie poster.  We were to use our new knowledge or composition, colour theory, and typography to create a movie poster in relation to our chosen haiku.

Poster three is a storyboard. We used this third poster to narrate a story we created from the same chosen haiku.

101 Haiku Posters: Text

We are what we choose,
the people that we let stay,
the things that we keep.

Haiku by Tyler Knott Gregson, from TarcherPerigee, a division of Penguin Random House. Copyright 2015, Tyler Knott Gregson.

One of key the messages I got from my chosen haiku is the people we choose to be in our lives contributes to the make-up of who we are. Our family and friends, who we choose to be around makes us who we are, and we have control over who we want to build and keep connections with. Everyone needs someone or some group to belong to, a connection they can refer to as family. People need someone they can talk to and the strength of the relationship will determine if things are being said. The triangles on this poster represent strength and with the different sizes and weights of triangles you see different strengths of the connections. Some will be stronger than others, some will not be consistent in strength, however, the main thing is that there is a relationship. Or though the poster is in black and white relationships are not. They come in all different shades of grey. When you see this poster hope you feel a sense of comfort and support knowing you have people around you.

This movie poster advertises one of the strong themes from my chosen haiku. That theme is taking control of yourself, of your life. Knott Gregson.T (2015)“We are who we choose” and who we want to be, we control this. No one should be in control of you, you are the one in charge. It takes true strength and power the to take control of your mind, behaviour and attitude on life in general. The haiku talks about what we bring in to our lives contributes to the person whom we are. The key words there are “what we bring.” Meaning we choose what we bring, we control if it stays. The intentions of this poster is to remind people that they are the ones that are controlling their lives. If you are having a bad day, you are the one letting it be bad. You have the strength and power to create a life you deserve.  So take control!

Officer Frogo - Story Board

This narrative tells a story with a moral everyone one should hear no matter what age. It talks about everyone having their own strengths and weaknesses that will contribute to a team. I hope that the story will encourage and remind people to not compare themselves to others. Comparing yourself to another only makes yourself or the other feel small and defeated when the fact is you are playing in a different game.
The way I have narrated this story board is intended for the younger audience as I believe the younger you here this message the more time you have to practise it. Comparing ourselves to others and then criticising ourselves because we are not pleased with how we compare is too common in today’s society. If my story board is understood, considered or even thought about the smallest bit every time some goes to compare themselves to another, then the story board is a success.
