Adobe Photoshop

I had always heard of the programs in the adobe cloud and imagined I would use them one day. I watched my sister use it very often as she is studying Fashion Design. Looking over her shoulder I was always interested in how it worked and the cool stuff that could be achieved on the programs.

When poster 2 came around in my course Design 101, we were advised to use something like Photoshop or Illustrator to create it. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous to use it. Fear of the unknown should not limit you to new knowledge.

The other day was the day that I built up the courage to face the terrifying unknown of the Adobe Cloud. I opened it up on my screen with my sister nearby. She started to teach me the basics of illustrator. I could see the frustration build in her eyes as I wasn’t picking up these basics she was introducing to me. When I said that I wanted to use photoshop she politely said I was best to ask the internet. This led me to 90minutes of Mr Ninja Boy on youtube teaching me the in’s and out’s of Adobe Photoshop. After, I was ready to brave it solo.

Here are my thoughts and opinions of Adobe Photoshop. What you can achieve on photoshop is amazing. The number of features overwhelmed me as a true beginner. I know what type of stuff someone can achieve on this program, creating a picture in my head of how I wanted my poster to end up looking like, however, the problem was I didn’t have a clue on how to achieve it. The different tools and different layers is all a bit too much for me to process. I admit that I am someone that has a short temper when it comes to technology so you can imagine my reactions when I try to move an object with the paintbrush. I will become more familiar with the program the more I use it, thinking maybe my opinion on it would change as well so I decided to ask people who use it all the time what their thoughts are. One explained, “there will always be something stopping you from doing what you want to do.” She explains how you have to look at the little things, like the wrong layer or the wrong tool to fix it. I then asked my sister, a soon to be fashion designer and she said it is an “industry standard” meaning most industries use the programs in the Adobe Cloud and knowing how to use them and having experience will put you in front of others when applying for a job in these industries.

I know now that like anything it will take time and practise. Practise makes progress. I have accepted the fact that I will always be learning when it comes to these programs. Excitement of the unknown now replaces my fear.
