We are what we choose,
the people that we let stay,
the things that we keep.
Haiku by Tyler Knott Gregson, from TarcherPerigee, a division of Penguin Random House. Copyright 2015, Tyler Knott Gregson.
Once I had my chosen haiku I thought about three key words that I thought related to the haiku. When I read the haiku I think about the ideas; you make the decisions, how import the relationships and connections you have with the people around you are and all aspects of you make you unique.
I shorten the idea in to single words and ended up with the words decisions/choice, relationships/connections and unique. Under each other the words I came up with geometrical drawings that I thought symbolised there words. After drawing a few ideas for each word, I decided to the word relationships/connections and go the with triangles for my geometric shape.
Triangles are the strongest geometric shape. I think strongest connections are the ones that influence who you are the most. It is important to recognise and build strong relationships.
Continuing the theme of triangles I drew up different drawings to see what I could do with triangles to convey the words, relationship and connections.
I played with the ideas of pattern and rhythm. All have repetition as I am using only triangles. I tried making a circle with these triangles. I tried to get triangles with different sizes, colour and weight.
I asked around to get feedback, I ask which ones are their favourite and which ones showed the word relationships and connections. The answers helped a-lot in the way it help me narrow these ideas down and also bring up other possibilities.
So I selected the most successful. (The ones outline in orange highlighter)
I started by getting the most liked one and drawing it on a larger scale.
The one with the triangles creating a circle in the section before, I wanted to see is if I could make a smaller circe or a circle with less triangles. This is shown in the bottom left picture. It wasn't that successful as I had to make the line thicker so that the triangle would connect.
I was given the question why a circle and decided to see what making the triangles form a larger triangle would look like, shown in the top right picture above. I couldn't decide whether I like the neat one or the more random one. I didn't find this successful because it was too difficult to try fit the triangles in the triangle perfectly even for the random one.
Then I got asked "why do they have to touch could you get them to form like an octagon?" I was interest to how this would turn out. (Bottom right corner) Once I saw it I didn't see much originality in it and decided I am making the triangles touch and connect to convey the word connections.
I cut a section out of the left picture as I thought to my self, this is the most successful part and it looked like its own group because or their proximity compared to the other triangles within the frame. With the cut out section on the right, I was happy with the formation and competition of the triangles. I now was interested in the different images I could produce just by changing the positive and negative spaces and the thickness of the lines.
These three different designs evolved by additions and substations of other ideas on the same paper. These are the result many ideas combined.
I like the different thickness of lines in the third picture, however the triangles show no difference in weight and look to be all floating. This is the same as the first picture on the left.
The middle was the most successful because it shows different weights to the triangles. The bottom triangle showing the act of gravity and looking the heaviest.
This is my end result for poster one.
I think if I had more time I would explored my options with the positive and negative spaces as I know there are so many possibilities to explore. This is not saying I am not happy with my final work. I think it show connection and relationships in a geometric way.
