Why Design?

When people ask what am I studying the follow-up question is always what type of design do you want to do? They ask, “do you want to design buildings and stuff?” I kindly reply no and explain that is what my brother is doing. Then they ask “oh, so like clothes and stuff?” I kindly reply no and explain that is what my sister is doing. Then I think to myself what do I want to do? I love the idea of the design, creating new things for the better. Whether the better is to save the planet or just to help a kind sole, I feel that this is the type of design I want to do. I know that my style of design and how I want to design will constantly change but I have a feeling that the reason why I want to design will continue to stay the same or similar.

I am an athlete, little bit off-topic I know, but as an athlete, we are constantly told to think about our "why?" for psychology and wellbeing reasons. Why? Why are we doing what are doing? It is the question that takes us back to our core and helps build drive behind our progression. I interviewed instagram influencer McCann (2020) and she explained that "knowing your "why?" gives you clarity and propose." She used the word "anchor" when times get tough while you are trying to achieve "something great or worth while."

I think everyone should ask themselves what their "why?" is once in a while. My “why?” for design starts with passion and interests. I have an interest in the environment and an interest in people. I have a passion for helping, a passion form learning and a passion for designing. In the future, I would like to use my passions for my interests. Why? Because it is my “why?”. Another aspect of my “why?” is I have this thing where I like to prove people wrong. Some people call me stubborn but agree the disagree. I was given some boundaries when I was diagnosed with dyslexia but throughout high school, it was my goal to prove to people it was a gift and I could break past the boundaries. I am excited to continue to prove people dyslexia is a gift through my passions and interests in design and stay true to my "why?" Ask yourself, What is your “why?”
